Who are we?

QED is an association that emerged as an initiative by the Mathematics students at the Autonomous University of Madrid. This association aims to bring mathematics closer to other students in the Faculty of Sciences through various activities.

The main activity is the publication of the QED Magazine, which includes popular science articles, pieces of mathematical history, puzzles, problems, and much more. To read the articles or learn more, you can visit the Magazine section.

Other examples of activities we have organized include university tournaments of Mus and Chess, the Mathematical Carnival, and we have even participated in camps organized by the Department of Mathematics at UAM.

Meaning of our name

Quod erat demonstrandum, abbreviated as QED, is a Latin phrase that means "what was to be demonstrated." It originates from the Greek phrase ὅπερ ἔδει δεῖξαι (hóper édei deĩxai), which was used by various ancient mathematicians, including Euclid and Archimedes, at the end of mathematical proofs to indicate that they had reached the required result for the proof.

Nowadays, the use of the QED acronym is less common, and in most situations, it is replaced by symbols, such as the filled square ( ■ ).

Board

Our association is organized through assemblies, where any member of the association can voice their opinion and participate. Everyone has a say and a vote, and important decisions are made collectively. However, we need a leadership team to formally establish ourselves as a student association at UAM. This team consists of a president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, and multiple board members.
